Food Review: Luna Protein Bar

The folks over at Luna did some field research before creating the brand's new protein bar, simply named Luna Protein . After researching women's snacking habits, Luna found that women want snacks to keep them full, but that the female snacker often overlooks the filling properties of protein. So the company created a new bar chock-full of 12 grams of the filling macronutrient. The Luna Protein bar comes in three flavors: chocolate peanut butter, cookie dough, and chocolate cherry almond. To see how the Luna Protein bars taste and if they're truly filling, read more. All three bars are reminiscent of candy bars, yet without being too sweet. And they all definitely satisfy the craving for chocolate. Luna sent me all three flavors to try; the chocolate peanut butter is my favorite, because I'm kind of a peanut butter fiend. I tested out the filling qualities of the bars by using them to ward off hunger during long stretches between meals, and the added protein seemed to help. I like pairing the bars with a piece of fruit. I wouldn't use this bar (or any bar for that matter) as a meal replacement, but the Luna Protein bar is a great post-gym treat. It certainly tides me over while cooking my dinner. At 180 calories a pop, these bars are better for your waistline than a Snickers and have about half the sugar too. Plus, Luna products are fortified with nutrients most women need: iron, folic acid, and calcium. I will be keeping a stash of the peanut butter flavor in my gym bag for sure.

A Reader’s Countdown to Competition: 12 Weeks Out

Check out the latest progress report from Figure Princess , who is training for several National Physique Committee figure competitions. You can read about her entire journey on the OnSugar blog Live. Laugh. Love. Lift. OK, this last Saturday was the 12 week mark. I was really happy with my progress pictures this week and can see my glutes and hamstrings starting to catch up. Like many women, this area is typically the last place I lose fat from and the first place it comes back. Thankfully some modifications in my cardio routine have jump started the slimming process! The big changes for this week are that my two steak meals are gone and have been replaced with three meals of tilapia. This of course happens the day after I buy up all the flank steak at the grocery store, but hopefully it will be back in the plan at some point. Until then, I'll just bury it in the back of the freezer so I don't miss it so much. Aside from that, things are staying consistent. I'm still getting ample amounts of protein along with oats, sweet potatoes, and fibrous green veggies every day. Training sessions are still solid and I'm continuing to see some strength gains week to week. Also, it's FINALLY starting to warm up outside so I'll be able to do my morning cardio with my dog outdoors. It's hard to drag myself to the gym alone at 4:45 each morning when I have to see this: This little guy is in for a big surprise! Every day is what you choose to make it, so make it a great week everyone! To find out what comes next for Figure Princess, start following Live. Laugh. Love. Lift. Or if you've got something to say, start your own OnSugar blog . Maybe we'll post your story here on FitSugar!

Minutes to a Healthier You: Walk Away From the Laptop

Hi, my name is FitSugar and I am an Internet addict. Not exactly, but between my job, iPhone, and home computer, there are days that I can spend a lot of time on the web. While this may not be entirely bad - surfing the web may slow down dementia , after all - it's not all good either. As much as I love all the great blogs, online communities, and fun time-wasting websites out there, I know that stepping away from the computer is a good thing. So I'm going to start shaving more and more time off my Internet usage, and may even make the weekend an Internet-free zone. For those of you not already doing this, I challenge you to do the same! You'll have more time to be active, visit with friends, and give your peepers a break from staring at a screen all day. If you think giving up the computer may be too hard for you, here are a few tips that may help with withdrawals. Schedule unabashed Internet-free time. Start off by designating times during the day where you will completely unplug yourself. For starters, I've been trying to stay offline as soon as work ends. Hopefully, I'll bump that up to an entire weekend. Set time limits . Don't make your web surfing and Internet usage nebulous. I know plenty of folks who are always on. For some, it's a laptop on the coffee table, while others may have a borderline obsessive BlackBerry habit. These constant online distractions affect the real life happenings around you. Instead, give yourself a set time limit to check and answer emails or surf the web. To see more tips, read more. Out of sight, out of mind. One way my friend stays off of her laptop is to put it in a drawer. Suddenly, the ease and temptation of going online are gone and she can focus on other things. It also forces her to fill her day with new activities. Get real. Make it a point to have a "real" conversation every day - ideally, one where you can see the other person's face. If you can't do this, try to at least go for a walk, bike ride, or any other way you can find to interact with the outside world.

Molly Ringwald Goes Green to Lose Weight

I've come to accept that I will always get a little choked up during the Oscars . This year it happened during the touching tribute to John Hughes - director of one of my all-time favorites, The Breakfast Club . It was especially great to see actress Molly Ringwald take the stage to honor her mentor. Like me, most of you thought Molly looked stunning in her purple Todd Thomas gown. Looking at her on stage, it was hard to believe that she gave birth to twins just eight months ago! The actress shared with People magazine that the key to slimming down for her was to keep everything in moderation. To find out how Molly lost the weight, read more. Molly also may be getting into the St. Patrick's Day spirit early, admitting that her day isn't complete without some green. "I try to make sure that I eat something green. I think that's just a really good rule of thumb. I love all different kinds of vegetables, but the green ones are generally the best for you and the best for your diet." While I think it's best to get a rainbow of colors on your plate , Molly is on to something - leafy green veggies are packed with vitamin A, folate, and potassium. Molly waited until her twins were 6 weeks old before she started to lose the weight, and made a decision to take things slow. "Just dieting basically, and it wasn't even like a really strict diet. It was more just a sensible diet, cutting down on sweets and upping the vegetables and protein, less starch, and I just worked out a lot, I'd say about three or four times a week."

Your Tips on Breaking Through the Wall

We've all been there. You're working out, running, biking, swimming, or whatever, and you hit a mental wall. All you can think about is wanting to stop and go home. This is a really common problem among regular exercisers, but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with. Here are some tips from fellow FitSugar readers. "Yeah, if I hit a wall it kind of depends on what that barrier is. If I'm just feeling 'ugh,' I give myself 10 minutes more to see if I start to feel better. If I'm feeling bad, I'll cut back on my intensity for a bit; walk instead of run, go into Child's Pose, etc. If I'm feeling downright terrible, I call it quits for the day. I've only really needed to do that once, but it turned out I had the beginnings of a stomach bug. Best to listen to your body, and be kind to yourself." - benheld "It's all about variety. Keep your body guessing and your mind active. Constantly switch up your workout so it doesn't get stale and you don't hit walls. Also, sometimes a great song can get you through anything!" - michlny Mila_83 says, "I try something new. If I usually run or take spinning classes, I go to the pool or take a fun urban rebounding class. Last time I tried rock climbing instead of usual 7-mile run." "If I feel like stopping I just think about how great I'll feel if I keep going and how bad I would feel if I gave up." - genipher85 For more great tips keep reading

Food Journals Fail You? Try Sharing With a Group

If you're trying to lose weight by counting calories and watching your portion sizes, monitoring your daily intake by writing it down in a food journal is really effective. The only problem is, if you're doing it on your own it can get boring, and you're more likely to get out of the habit. If you've tried food journaling before and never got into it, try food journaling with a group of people. Every night, email your fellow food journalers your daily menu, and they'll email you theirs. You can share comments and questions, so not only will you learn a lot about proper daily nutrition, but you'll also get ideas for snacks and meals. I also find that it makes you more accountable for your choices, and less likely to forget to write down that handful of M&Ms, or mid-afternoon mocha muffin. You can update each other on the pounds you've lost, which will inspire the entire group to stick with it. Tell me, have any of you tried group food journaling before? Why not start one in the Weight Loss Support Group ?

Manage Your Wires While Working Out

Music is often an essential for a good workout, but managing those wiley wires from iPod to earbuds can be a pain. Many companies are brainstorming some creative solutions to manage your gadgets while you get your heart rate up. Gracie Gear , one fitness gear innovator, recently sent me a Short Top ($36), a wicking sports bra with a pocket. The pocket is large enough for an iPhone, and it has small hole in the pocket for your iPod cord to feed through and a flap on the shoulder to manage the path of the cord. You can also use the pocket to stow your keys and a sports gel - the pocket can hold both along with your cell phone or iPod. Kind of an ingenious plan for running hands-free, but not the most supportive bra I have ever worn. The Magneat ($15) is designed to keep your earbud wires from distracting you while you're on the move. It's made of two magnets that stick to either side of your shirt, creating a secure attraction and looking like a mini yo-yo that you wind your excess earbud wire around. The top magnets are decorated with fun images too; as you can see Magneat sent me one with a pixelated skull, but there are many other designs to choose from, including a PacMan . This little gadget is actually kind of neat and certainly kept that darn cord out of my way.

Cardio Workout: Elliptical Intervals Shrinking Recovery

By now, we all hopefully know that interval training rocks . Whether you're running, rowing, or swimming, playing with speed has multiple benefits. One way to push the interval envelope is to decrease the amount of rest time between your bouts of sprinting. By shortening your recovery time, you're pushing your anaerobic threshold and strengthening your cardiovascular system. Plus it's fun to mix it up once in a while. My latest elliptical workout is 30 minutes of calorie-burning interval fun. Check it out when you read more. *SPM = Strides Per Minute **RPE = Rate of Perceived Exertion My elliptical has a fixed incline of 20 percent, so set your machine with at least some incline if you can. As always, if this is too easy or too hard, change the amount of resistance and the strides per minute. If this workout doesn't float your boat, check out my other cardio plans . I have received comments from some readers that their elliptical machines don't have SPM readout. For a machine that uses RPM (revolutions per minute), simply halve the number listed for SPM. If your machine uses MPH (miles per hour), use the rate of perceived exertion chart . The recovery periods feel like a jog measuring between four and five RPE, and the sprints between eight and 10 RPE. Here is a printable version to take to the gym.

Hey Miley, Stand Up Straight!

Did you catch Miley Cyrus on the red carpet during this year's Oscars ? Her gorgeous Jenny Packham gown was overshadowed by her hunched-over posture. She was joined by repeat slouching offender Kristen Stewart , who stood slightly taller than usual on the red carpet. Besides not looking so hot, slouching can erase all of the hard work you've done at the gym and affect future workouts. Here, a few tips on checking and improving your posture: Did you know standing just a little bit taller can make you look 10 pounds lighter ? That's right, it's that simple. To instantly drop the pounds, try this posture checklist . Consider trying a Pilates class , even just once. Pilates focuses on your all-important core and encourages great posture by engaging your deep ab muscles and keeping your spine neutral. Perform a quick posture check during the day. Get into the habit of checking your posture each time you do a repetitive activity like going to the ATM, standing in line for your morning coffee, or waiting for a traffic light to turn green. Bad posture can even cause back pain. If you don't notice an improvement simply sitting and standing a little bit straighter, try the Alexander Technique , which teaches basic body mechanics while improving posture. Not only will improved posture make you look taller and thinner, it'll help your running and walking workouts

Bad Effects of Snoring on Health

Effects of Snoring As a rule, snoring occurs only during sleeping. It is occurred by creation of vibrated movement of air by obstruction of air way during respiration while sleeping. image by asonor1 Sound is generated during this process due to vibration. The sound varies in persons from soft to louder. It is often unpleasant. Usually the uvula and soft palate are the structures that involves in the production of snoring and it is caused by irregular blockage of air movement. More over, it can be defined as a “ noisy breathing ” through mouth and nose while sleeping. There are so many factors involve in this condition. Some examples are: Weakness of throat and relaxation of muscles in the air way. Defects in the jaw position Obstruction of air passage in nostrils. Tongue dropping back into throat. Continuous sleeping postures usually lying on back. Touching of tissues in the top airways causing vibration Alcoholism relaxes the respiratory muscle system. Susceptibility of snoring increasing as age grows. image by elescher68 The bad impacts or effects of snoring : When a person snores it is an annoying one to anybody who sleeps nearby. Even it may cause a couple to sleep separately in the night and thereby it seriously affects the relationship. In rare cases the snoring causes stoppage of breathe and resulting in serious condition. Some body feels sleepy during day time and this morning fatigue causes serious effects in health. Recent studies try to correlate snoring with heart diseases . Snoring leads to various poor health conditions. When a person is having the habit of snoring during sleep it means that he is deprived of peaceful sleep which causes many ill health conditions both physically and mentally. Lack of peaceful sleep in a regular pattern generally causes anxiety , tension, bad temper and behavior changes. This condition also causes poor thinking capacity and weak memory. Sleep deprived persons due to snoring are not alert in their duties on the day and they are impatient and bad tempered. image by asonor1 Long term sleep depriviation due to snoring causes serious consequences. It increases the blood pressure , possible heart ailment , weight gain , depression , injury from accidents and mental disorder. It is also described that snorers are prone to life threatening diseases like heart attacks and strokes . Recently researches on snoring explain the possibility of diabetes and the brain tissue damage due to lack of oxygen supply. Decreased libido and day time drowsiness is often seen among snorers. Irritability is the common condition seen. Though it affects mildly in some persons and in others even it affects the life style. The studies recently made on loud snoring shows that it is causing carotid artery atherosclerosis and they emphasize that loud snoring causes turbulence in the blood flow and which causes irritation to blood flow and causing carotid atherosclerosis . Habitual snoring is the strongest indication of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is the condition during sleep where there are pauses in breathing. One or more breaths are missed in each episode of apnea and occur and repeated throughout the sleep. The breath missing time is about 10 seconds. Five or more episodes are noted for every hour of sleep. The interruption of breathe is caused by lack of respiratory effort. These symptoms may be present for years and the sufferer may be affected by day time sleepiness and fatigue. The untreated sleep apnoea may increase the risk of hypertension, heart attack and strokes. It also leads to impotence, decreased memory and personality changes. Snoring and sleep apnoea now can be monitored and diagnosed in the home itself by using a convenient portable “sleep monitoring device”. image by asonor1 Snoring is usually recognized by the partner or friend who observes one’s snoring. Generally the sleep disorders such as snoring is identified by a sufferer by his/her bad feeling of day time drowsiness or sleepiness, decreased concentration in work and by depressed feeling while working. A sufferer may ask somebody to note his snoring habit or he can diagnose this event of snoring by simply putting a tape recorder to record the episodes of snoring sounds. A sleep study will show the severity of the condition. Snoring needs no costlier treatment and it is cured almost by changing the sleeping patterns. Almost until this time that all treatments are aimed to tighten the throat and air way passage muscles and in clearing the blockage of the air passage. Smoking is a cause that “weakens and clogs” the throat and hence every snorer is asked to stop smoking. image by timtak Every snorer is asked to do the following : Do not lie on the back and lie by sides always. Clear the nasal passage before going to sleep by sprays. Do moderate exercise Elevate head while sleeping Do not have any alcohol before sleeping Do not take any medications for anxiety Inhale steam foams before sleep Keep punctuality in sleeping. Numerous over the counter aids are available for snorers like nasal sprays , nose clips , nasal strips , pillows specially made for snorers and anti-snore clothes. However, snoring is always mild and sometimes it causes serious medical conditions and for which reason that an expert in this field can be consulted if it lasts longer and every snorer should get their advice before using anything or any devices to stop the symptoms.
